The Moultrie Town Committee of NSCDA-GA Launches Downtown History Project in Honor of America’s 250th Birthday

Moultrie, GA – The Moultrie Town Committee of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia (NSCDA-GA), in partnership with the Downtown Moultrie Welcome Center, is proud to announce an ongoing project to document and share the history of downtown Moultrie’s historic buildings as part of the commemoration of America’s 250th birthday. Often described as the heart of Colquitt County, downtown Moultrie has long been a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. For generations, it has served as a center of commerce, community, and connection. However, the downtown area has undergone significant changes since its earliest days. In the early 1900s, Moultrie’s streets were still dirt, and the first brick buildings were just beginning to rise. Over time, buildings were torn down and replaced, streets were paved, and the familiar downtown landscape that residents know and love today began to take shape. This project seeks to uncover and preserve the stories behind those changes—highlighting what stood before and how downtown evolved through the decades. The project will feature historic photographs and researched information about individual downtown buildings, offering the public an opportunity to explore Moultrie’s past and better understand its present. As new information is discovered, the project will continue to grow and be updated. This initiative honors not only America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, but also the people, places, and stories that have shaped Moultrie into the community it is today. The Moultrie Town Committee of NSCDA-GA is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history and heritage of Moultrie and Colquitt County through education, research, and community engagement. Patriotic service is also part of their mission. They are hoping to have the initial part of this project completed by July 4, 2026.
