Coleman Building

In 1900 the second brick building in downtown Moultrie was built. J. W. Coleman paid a whopping $238 for the land. In 1900 James Benenson opened the first business in the building called Benenson’s Bargain. By 1904 O. A. Beall, a dry goods, shoes, clothing, and grocery store, occupied the space on the right-hand side. In 1906 the Moultrie Lodge of Odd Fellows leased space on the second story. It was to be used by two of the Odd Fellow lodges and the Woodmen of the World.

Over the years, the Coleman building has housed many interesting businesses. The left side of the building housed Davis Seed and Produce Company in 1922. People shopped here for field seeds, flowers, ferns, and plants, among other things. During that same time period, there was a cigar factory upstairs called Falkenbury Co. Cigar Manufacturers and Colquitt Furniture Company could be found on the right side of the building.

After the seed and produce company came Swannee Sweet Shops in 1935, this business didn’t last long, and by the next year, Western Auto Associates Store had moved into the location.

In 1951 Virginia Dare opened up shop followed by Warners.

As the years went by, the furniture company was replaced with Greene Funeral Home in 1936. In 1940 the name of the mortuary was changed to Greene-Gregory Funeral Home. This downtown location became too small for the business and in 1955 it moved. Then came several different shoe stores, the most recognizable being Dick Causey Shoes.

Just Hair & Day Spa was next followed in 1999 by Country Junction.

They moved away due to fire damage but returned in 2001 and expanded before relocating in 2004. Perry’s Pagers occupied the left half of the building for a time.

In 2004 Party and Lawn Expressions opened and remained here for a few years before relocating.

In 2008 Flair Salon held its grand opening.

The building is still being used and continues to carry the lettering across the red brick facade “Coleman Building 1900”. The building now houses Prospex Promotions, Home of Udeserveacookie.com.
