Friedlander’s Department Store

Below you see one of the oldest photos of Moultrie. This photo, taken in 1895, shows the results of Moultrie’s heaviest snowfall – approximately ten inches.  In 1896, newspapers show J. J. Battle & Company moved into the Autrey building on the corner of East and South Broad Street.

In 1897 W.B. Dukes opened a general merchandise store at the old Battle & Co location. Dukes offered dry goods, groceries and a large line of hardware.

This photo, taken around 1900, shows the corner where Friedlanders was located. The Sanburn Fire Map from 1899 shows a drug store with a D.G. Clo, and B&S in this building.

By 1905, Rogers, Touchton & Company had moved into this location on East Broad Street.

Elaine Barber, Caroline Barber, and Debbie Friedlander conducted research on this building as part of the NSCDA-GA Moultrie Town Committee’s project for America’s 250th birthday.
