First National Bank Drive-Thru

In 1917 Moultrie’s first YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) building was completed. F. R. Pidcock Sr. served as the first President. The structure, located at 24 First Street SW, was built as an expenditure of $30,000 and was also financed by local capital. Individuals, clubs, churches, and businesses pulled together nickels, dimes and dollars to make this dream a reality.

In this photo from the 1938 YMCA Christmas Program you can see the Badminton Champion posing in front of the YMCA building.

Portions of the building can also be seen in these photos of hiking groups from 1938.

In 1953 an expansion program and renovation was launched and approximately $40,000 was raised to renovate the “Y” and add a Health Club. That addition brought revived interested into the “Y” program and boosted membership considerably. In the photo below you can see how the original Moultrie YMCA looked in colonial styling in the late 1950’s following a major facelift and expansion.

By the early 1970s more space was needed for the rapidly increasing membership. In 1974 a new building was constructed for the YMCA.

Pope and Pope Insurance Agency, Inc. occupied the building in the late 70s to early 80s.

In 2022 the building was demolished.

In November of 2023 a grand opening and ribbon cutting was held for the First National Bank’s Drive-Thru.

To honor the history of the YMCA, the marker from the original building was saved and incorporated into the new structure.
