Swift & Company Meat Packing Plan opened in 1914, located on North Main Street at the north edge of town. Establishing the plant was a bold risk because there was no established market to serve the facility. The Southern economy was maturing, so taking advantage of, or redirecting the resources available was necessary.
The Moultrie Packing Company was the first and most successful of meat-packing attempts in the south. In 1917, the plant was transferred to Swift & Company, one of the “Big Five” meat-packing companies of the United States.
The Swift & Company packing plant was economically & socially embedded in the Moultrie community from 1914 to 2001, when most of the historic structure was razed.
It’s that time again, October 11th is around the corner! We are super excited about 100 miles of bargains and deals. Come in and sign up for your space now. We have registration forms available at the Main Street Office located at 120 North Main Street (next door to Sherwin Williams Paint Store) or you may give us a call at 229-890-5455.
